The pandemic has affected this student from Arakkonam in more ways than one. After the closure of colleges, he has been working in a glass factory while trying to keep up with online classes. His step-brother, who is employed in Chennai, had helped to pay the student's fees last year but is unable to do so this year after the economic slowdown.
The student's father has been unemployed in the last two years because of ill-health and had to undergo a hernia surgery recently. He used to work as a tea-master in a restaurant earlier. The student's mother earns a monthly income of Rs. 5,000 from her tailoring work in a company and a younger sister is in Class 12 in a government school.
The head of the department that the student is enrolled in has vouched for his hard work and interest in studies. The student does not have arrears and had an attendance of 97% last year.
After review, Aalayam has decided to help the student with a sum of Rs. 30,000 towards his fees.
